Hotspot - Picking Garden Bloemenzee in Kruiningen
"But this picking garden also takes you closer to nature and you can enjoy the beautiful nature our country has to offer."
Hotspot - Picking garden Bloemenzee (sea of flowers) in Kruiningen. No 'food' hotspot today, but still something that fits with me and Organic Happiness. My mission with Organic Happiness is to inspire as many people as possible to see the power of nature by eating (more) natural.
But this picking garden also takes you closer to nature and you can enjoy the beautiful nature our country has to offer.
This picking garden is literally around the corner for me and still I have not yet visited it in the 1,5 years we live here. All that time I had that idea to go someday, but it just never happened. Until a few weeks ago I decided it had to happen so I walked to this beautiful garden.
When you arrive you will get a warm welcome by the employees. They will ask you if you have been there before and you will get clear instructions. Specially for the peonies, it is signed which ones you can cut. The other ones are not yet ripe and there is a risk they might not bloom. The same counts when it comes to the color of the peonies, if you see the color it is good, if you don't they are just not yet ready to cut. You will get a tray and scissors and you are good to go.
The picking garden will not open until the half of May so I was a bit early. There were quite some flowers that had to grow a bit more or start to bloom, but I did have quite some choice. Those beautiful peonies the season for them is very short so I enjoyed them very much. At this garden they have more than 150 different sorts of flowers, the peonies, but also sunflowers for example and lady's mantle. You can easily walk through the garden and cut whatever you like.
Eventually you will end with a table where you can make bouquets and the staff will help you to take care of the flowers or put them in the water while you will do something else.
Because this picking garden is not just for the flowers, they also have animals. Very nice for the kids, they have some small kind of kangaroos, super cute.
Another unique element of this picking garden is the fact that during the Summer (week 23 until week 32) you can also cut glasswort. This typical sea vegetable from the province of Zeeland usually grows in the sea. But with this picking garden they researched how the glasswort grows and made sure they can culture it on land. That is unique in the world. And by cutting it in the right way you can make sure it will still grow next year as well. I will definitely try that this summer.
And when you are done with picking you can relax at the sunny terrace. They serve nice fruit juices, coffee and tea of course with pastry. Unfortunately that is not very healthy, but that is also allowed sometimes. And while you are enjoying your flowers the kids can have fun in the playground and the sandbox. And if you are going to pay for the flowers you will enter a small store where you can buy nice souvenirs and fresh fruit.
I really enjoyed this place very much and I can definitely imagine this is very fun to do with your kids during this summer holiday. I also really like the end result of what I picked and that for just a small price.
You don't buy any entree price you only pay for what you cut
€0,50 for a peonie
€0,25 for every other flower
€0,75 for every artichoke
€4,25 for 500 grams self cut glasswort
